The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) has donated 200 mono desks and chairs worth about GH₵100,000.00 to the University. It was to help augment the University Management’s desk provision and make teaching and learning more effective and conducive.
The Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor of AAMUSTED, Prof. James K. Kagya-Agyemang, received the desks on behalf of Management on Monday, August 1, 2022, profusely thanking the leadership of the students for the “thoughtful gift.”
He acknowledged that being a new University, AAMUSTED would require time and extra effort to acquire adequate facilities to meet demands. He, therefore, observed that generous gestures like the SRC donation could be valuable support towards realising the ultimate plan of making the University self-sufficient.
Under the circumstances, he appealed to the students to develop individual interests in protecting the available facilities so the University would not go on a cycle of always spending scarce resources on buying things to replace destroyed ones.
He advised against dragging the available desks from the lecture rooms to unapproved locations like the leisure areas and their halls of residence and hostels. “This is why we have a lot of broken chairs and desks that Management is now trying to replace,” he said.
According to him, the processes to acquire more desks for the lecture rooms were at advanced stages, assuring them of an end, in the coming weeks, to any challenges they face regarding desks.
Meanwhile, he said Management would ensure the proper maintenance of the donated desks and asked the SRC leadership to support the University in keeping tabs on students who might want to handle university property with careless abandon.
Prof. Kagya-Agyemang highly commended the current SRC leaders for not abandoning uncompleted projects started by their predecessors. “That is a sure way to bring development, he said, urging succeeding SRC leaders to emulate the example of the current leaders.
The incumbent SRC President, Mr. Henry Peter Bernasco, earlier acknowledged that the immediate past SRC administration started the processes to procure the desks and chairs. He assured Management of their readiness to support in every way possible to maintain AAMUSTED on the path of progress.
Also present to support Prof. Kagya-Agyemang to receive the desks and chairs were the Acting Registrar, Mr. Michael Kofi Adu; the Acting Director of Finance, Mr. Geoffrey Mensah; the Vice Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Philip Oti Agyen, and his Administrator, Dr. Mrs. Matilda Obeng Kyere, and representatives from the Estate Department of the University. The immediate past President of the SRC, Mr. Richard Opoku, was also present.
