The German Academic Exchange Service [Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD)] has appointed Associate Prof. Emmanuel Appiah-Kubi, Dean of the Faculty of Technical Education (FTE) at the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), as its Research Ambassador in the Ashanti Region from 2025 to 2027.
He is one of 12 first generation DAAD Research Ambassadors appointed in the West African sub-region. The 12 Research Ambassadors included eight (8) Ghanaians, two (2) Nigerians, and two (2) Cameroonians.
The DAAD Research Ambassador’s role only goes to highly recognised scholars and researchers who studied or conducted research in Germany and are assessed as worthy of emulation by upcoming researchers and students.
Prof. Appiah-Kubi’s induction into the new role happened on April 24, 2025, as part of a special awards ceremony DAAD organised for the official opening of its Regional Office in Accra. He thus became the designated liaison for research collaboration with the DAAD and Germany within the specified region for the next two years.
Given the opportunity after the induction, he expressed happiness for being recognised and conferred with such a privilege, which he said he would leverage to present the numerous opportunities available for study and research in Germany to many Ghanaian youths, especially AAMUSTED staff and students.
“There are scholarships, fellowships, and research grants available for grasps,” he said, announcing that he would soon begin special information sessions for staff and students at AAMUSTED to guide them to the numerous opportunities that the DAAD has to offer.
“The DAAD opportunities are easily accessible through the DAAD website, various links, online information sessions, and face-to-face at the DAAD Regional Office in Accra.” Prof. Appiah-Kubih said.

Prof. Emmanuel Appiah-Kubi is an Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering at AAMUSTED, Kumasi. Before assuming his current position as Dean of FTE, he was the Director for Quality Assurance, Planning and Accreditation at AAMUSTED from 2021-2023. He also worked as a Research Scientist at the Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG) – Center for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Kumasi from 2010 to 2019.
He had his Doctoral Research Stay at the Georg-August University of Goettingen, Germany (during the PhD study). He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (PGDTLHE). He has had a lot of international internships and research stays in institutions including the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH), Biel, Switzerland (during MPhil study).
He is a member of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) and a Senior Professional Engineer (Civil/Structural Engineer). He has a lot of experience in both the construction and wood industries in Ghana and is currently a member of ISO Technical Committees ISO/TC 165 (Timber Structures) and ISO/TC 296 (Bamboo and Rattan) as well as an expert for INBAR and belongs to INBAR Task Forces for Bamboo Construction and Rattan. He is also a member of the UNESCO-UNEVOC BILT Expert group on Building and Construction.
He is an EDGE Expert under the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group.
Prof. Appiah-Kubi’s research interest is in the development of affordable high-quality innovative local construction materials and technologies. He has been involved in the design and construction of several green (sustainable) infrastructure projects.
