The UEW Co-operative Credit Union (UEWCCU) has undertaken an exercise to plant a range of fruit-bearing and shade tree seedlings at the Kumasi campus of the Akenten Appiah-Menkah University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), and nearby Anglican Basic School, as part of the Union’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. The seedlings included coconut, mango, and orange.

The move was also a response to the Government of Ghana’s call on citizens to support the ‘Tree for Life’ initiative to plant about 30 million trees nationwide from June 5-30, 2025, as part of a broader effort to restore about 7 million hectares of the country’s degraded lands and combat climate change.

The AAMUSTED Branch Manager of the UEWCC, Mr. Isaac Nii Amatey, who led the exercise on June13, 2025, expressed happiness that the Credit Union was fulfilling a promise to play a role in promoting environmental sustainability and beautification of the AAMUSTED Campus, its host.

He thanked the Management of AAMUSTED for the enabling environment it had created for the UEWCCU to thrive, assuring it that the Union would continue to explore ways to support the development and peaceful co-existence on campus.

“We have deliberately focused on planting mainly fruit-bearing seedlings so that the thousands of students of AAMUSTED could have easy access to them for their nutrition and good health,” he explained.

Mr. Amatey said his outfit would work closely with University Officials to nurture the seedlings into maturity. As a first measure in that regard, he assured that the Credit Union would sponsor a wire-mesh fencing around all the seedlings planted to protect them from animal attacks and devouring.

On behalf of the AAMUSTED Management, the Acting Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Michael Kofi Twum-Ampomah, accepted the seedlings and expressed heartfelt appreciation to UEWCCU for their generous initiative. He commended the Credit Union for its commitment to promote environmental sustainability and dedication to corporate social responsibility.

Mr. Twum-Ampomah recalled UEWCCU’s previous contributions, including donating chairs to the University Clinic and providing essential equipment to Mynd FM, hoping that the Credit Union would continue supporting AAMUSTED, particularly given the cordial relationship between the University and the Credit Union, whose members are predominantly AAMUSTED staff.

He said the University is pleased to host UEWCCU, which offers staff financial support through savings and loan facilities.
