ABOUT US

History

The Department of Economics Education is one of the departments that falls under the Faculty of Business Education at the Akenten Appiah- Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED). It was established in 2022 following the transformation of the former University of Education, Winneba (UEW) campuses in Kumasi and Asante Mampong into an autonomous university, AAMUSTED, by an Act of Parliament (Act 1026, 2020).

From its inception, the Department has been central to AAMUSTED’ s mandate of producing skilled teachers and professionals with expertise in both economic theory and pedagogy. It began with the flagship BSc Economics Education programme with only 30 students and soon expanded to include the BSc Economics with Social Studies Education and the BSc Economics (Weekend) programme, aimed at providing flexible learning options for working professionals and mature learners. Now the Department can boast a student populace of more than 1, 1000 students.

The founding leadership of the Department headed by Mr. Eric Effah Sarkodie laid a strong academic foundation through curriculum development, staff recruitment, and student engagement initiatives. Over the years, the Department has attracted a dedicated team of lecturers and administrative staff committed to high- quality teaching, innovative research, and impactful community service.

With a steady increase in student enrollment and faculty capacity, the Department has become known for its rigorous academic standards, integration of technology in teaching, and relevance to national development. Its alumni continue to serve in various sectors including education, finance, governance, and consultancy, making meaningful contributions to society.

The Department has also made significant strides in research and outreach. Faculty members engage in interdisciplinary research addressing critical socio- economic and educational issues in Ghana and beyond. The Department supports academic conferences, student- led research, and professional development activities to enhance the intellectual culture of the University.

Looking ahead, the Department of Economics Education envisions expanding its programmes, strengthening industry and international partnerships, and further enhancing its role in shaping the next generation of educators, researchers, and policy professionals. Through innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence, the Department continues to contribute to AAMUSTED’ s broader mission of skills training and entrepreneurial development.
