ABOUT USTED

The University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (USTED), was established on August 27, 2020, under Act 1026 of 2020 by the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana with the name Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED). In 2025, Parliament amended Act 1026 which established the University by Act 1162. Act 1162 of 2025 changed the name of the University from Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development to the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development.

Per Act 1026, the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) and the College of Agriculture Education (CAGRIC), Asante Mampong, which were campuses of the University of Education, Winneba, became AAMUSTED.

The College of Technology Education, Kumasi started as a Technical Training Centre in 1963. In 1967 the Technical Training Centre became a Technical Teachers’ College. Again, in 1978, the Technical Teachers’ College was changed to the Kumasi Advanced Technical Teachers College (KATTC).

The College of Agriculture Education on the other hand, evolved from the St. Andrews Training College, Akropong-Akwapim in the Eastern Region. It was established in 1946 by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) and the Scottish Mission. In 1951, the College was moved to Asante Mampong.

The KATTC and the St. Andrews Training College were part of the seven (7) Diploma Awarding Institutions which were amalgamated to form the University College of Education of Winneba (UCEW) and affiliated to the University of Cape Coast by PNDC Law 322, in 1992. The University College of Education of Winneba was weaned from the University of Cape Coast to become an autonomous university, University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in 2004, under Act 672 of the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana. COLTEK and CAGRIC remained campuses of UEW until August 2020 when they were decoupled from UEW to become AAMUSTED.

The University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Ghana’s Premier Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Entrepreneurial Development Teacher Education University was established to among others, provide higher education in Technical, Vocational, and Entrepreneurial Training to develop skilled manpower for job creation and economic development.

Our Mandate

  1. provide higher education in technical, vocational, and entrepreneurial training to develop skilled manpower for job creation and economic development,
  2. train and provide teachers with the relevant competence for teaching in technical and vocational education and training institutions,
  3. train and provide teachers with the relevant competence for teaching entrepreneurial development, and
  4. develop strong linkages between the University and (i) industry, or (ii) the community, to ensure the holistic training of teachers.

Basic Services and Opportunities

  1.  Training of students in TVET for job creation and economic development
  2. Training of teachers in TVET institutions for effective teaching and learning

  3. Training to equip teachers with skills and competencies to develop the entrepreneurial knowledge and knowhow of students

  4. Development of linkages with industry, commerce, and the community for effective training of teachers

Profile of USTED

  • The University currently has ten (10) Faculties and twenty-seven (27) Academic Departments. 
  • The main Campus at Kumasi has six (6) Faculties and sixteen (16) Academic Departments, while Asante-Mampong Campus has four (4) Faculties and eleven (11) Academic Departments. 
  • The University has established an Institute for Competency-Based Training and Research (ICBTR), which oversees and implements Competency-Based Training activities and programmes in the country.  
  • The Institute of Entrepreneurial Development Education and Innovation (IEDEI) of USTED is established to provide Entrepreneurial Development Training and Education in the University for both staff and students, nurture start-up enterprises and assist existing SMEs and the informal sector businesses in the field of entrepreneurship craftmanship. 
  • USTED runs the Institute for Teacher Professional Development and Lifelong Learning (ITPDLL) which has the mandate of facilitating mentorship programme between the University and its affiliate Colleges of Education, providing and coordinating Continuous Professional Development and Research (CPDR) activities at the affiliate Colleges of Education, among others. 

  • The Guidance and Counselling Centre (GCC) of the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development is responsible for equipping academic counsellors with contemporary skills for effective guidance, mentorship, and student support. 

Location of USTED

The main campus is located in Kumasi, the second-largest city in Ghana and seat of the Asante Kingdom, off the Kumasi-Sunyani Highway.

It is about 280 kilometers northwest of Accra. The Asante-Mampong Campus, which is 63 kilometers from the main campus is located in Asante-Mampong, the seat of the Silver Stool of the Asante Kingdom.
