DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT'S MESSAGE

DR. STEPHEN BAFFOUR ADJEI

On behalf of staff and students, I would like to warmly welcome you all to the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) and to the Department of Educational Leadership (DEL). The Department of Educational Leadership was established in 2010 under the Faculty of Education and Communication Sciences (FECS), to prepare and educate graduates to acquire essential theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to take up educational leadership positions at any level in Ghana and elsewhere.

The department currently runs three attractive postgraduate programmes: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Master of Arts (MA), all of which are in Educational Leadership with specialisation options in curriculum and organisational behaviour. The MA programme is sandwich-based, flexibly designed to accommodate the needs and time schedules of our hardworking students who combine school with work, particularly teachers in the Ghana Education Service.

There is a 1-year top-up opportunity for our MA graduates who wish to upgrade to MPhil. Other specialised programmes such as Doctor of Education (EdD) in Educational Management and Administration; MPhil in Educational Administration and Master of Education (MEd) in Educational Management and Administration have been developed, and the department is in the process of securing accreditation from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) for a roll-out soon.

Our PhD and MPhil programmes in Educational Leadership are full-time based, and are
designed to provide for the training needs of people who desire to work in academic positions
in higher education and other research-based organizations. The programmes are also designed
to optimally prepare students for professional career, scholarship, and leadership and to better
contribute to knowledge in education and training. We are committed to training graduates to
acquire theoretical knowledge, practical skills and technologically-oriented leadership
competencies to be able to understand, conduct, interpret, and critique educational research.
Our training equips graduates with up-to-date critical and creative ideas to acquire
comprehensive understanding in planning, designing, and developing context-appropriate
quality curriculum packages and instructional materials for education and training.
There are hardworking and supportive mentoring staff who are well-established in their
respective academic and professional fields of training to engage and assist students in their
studies and research work. Because we are aware that the majority of our students are adults,
our teaching methodology makes adequate room to accommodate and capitalize on the learning
styles that are appropriate for adult learners. To this end, the department provides rigorous,
collaborative and powerful learning environment that are adult-centered, flexible and
competency-based.

I would like to personally encourage you to take your studies seriously through dedicated
reading and research, to become a catalyst for positive change in your school, organisation and
community. I implore you to take advantage of the many learning opportunities at the
department and in the university to harness your own transformative power, build on your
existing knowledge and professional experience, and pursue a personally and professionally
relevant topics for your research dissertation. I encourage you to attend all department and/or
university-organised seminars, workshops and colloquia to learn the practice of education and
leadership.

On behalf of faculty and students of DEL, I wish you an inspiring and engaging learning
experience, and above all, God’s blessings!
