The Department is one of the three Departments in the Faculty of Technical Education at the Kumasi campus of AAMUSTED. The Department is committed to increasing access to Construction Technology and Management Education in the Country. The rationale for establishing the department is to train professional Construction Technology and Management Teachers for all levels of Education and Industrial Experts as well as to conduct research, disseminate knowledge, and contribute to educational policy and development. We offer Bachelors, Masters and PhD programmes in Construction Technology and Construction Management.
The Department aims to train competent professional Construction Technology and Management Teachers for all levels of TVET education, and also be able to establish their businesses/firms to create jobs in the Construction and Wood industries. We have state-of-the-art facilities that support teaching and learning, and students make good use of them. Our department can boast of distinguished Professors and lecturers with international recognition who undertake teaching and research. We also have well-trained technicians who man the various workshops and the laboratories.

The Department of Construction and Wood Technology Education was established in the 2013/2014 academic year, out of the then Department of Design and Technology (DTE).The DTE was established in 1996 as Technology Department to run programmes in Construction Technology, Wood Technology, Mechanical Technology, Electrical/Electronic Technology and Automotive as well as Catering and Fashion Technology Education. In the bid to satisfy national aspirations and recommendations from stakeholders, the programme was reviewed to include more content courses while the expected degree upon successful completion was changed from Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) to Bachelor of Science (BSc.).
These were also aimed at establishing well equipped detached departments for efficient and effective input and output of knowledge, skills and experience which will surely make the department’s real centres of excellence. Besides the undergraduate programme (BSc.), the Department of Construction and Wood Technology Education run Master of Technology (MTech.), Master of Philosophy (MPhil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) programmes in Wood Science, Construction Technology and Construction Management. The Department had benefited from the newly established state of the art workshops/laboratories with adequate equipment and machines to train competent graduates.
The aim and objectives of the Department of Construction and Wood Technology Education align very well the Vision, Mission and strategic plans of the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) and the local and national demand. Thus, the Vision of the Department is “to become an outstanding Centre for the training of Construction and Wood Technology teachers and entrepreneurs in the West African sub-region. The Mission is “To equip students with the necessary academic and professional competencies and skills through the use of innovative techniques to enable them teach effectively in both pre-tertiary and tertiary TVET institutions, and also establish their own businesses/firms in the fields of Construction and Wood.
The Aim of the Department is to training competent professional Construction and Wood Teachers for all Levels of TVET education, and also be able to establish their own businesses/firms to create jobs in the Construction and Wood industries.
The objectives of the Department are to:
- train students to acquire technical and innovative skills in the field of construction and wood technology education;
- provide students with an understanding of the principles and techniques involved in construction and wood projects design and implementation to be able to establish their own businesses/firms;
- develop research competencies in the students to enable them to conduct research and disseminate the findings through seminars, conferences, workshops and publications.
The administrative office of the Department of Construction and Wood Technology Education under the Faculty of Technical Education (FTE) is located on the ground floor of Construction Block at AAMUSTED. This office is managed by dedicated and hardworking Head of department and administrative staff.

The Department currently has nineteen (19) lecturers with fourteen (15) lecturers on full time, two (2) on post retirement contract and three (3) on part time.
