Mr. Micheal Adu, one of the longest-serving staff and a former Acting Registrar of the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Development (AAMUSTED), was among eight people who retired from the University at the end of September 2023.

For 30 years, Mr. Adu offered dedicated service, from the days when AAMUSTED was the Kumasi and Asante Mampong Campuses of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), and three years into the life of AAMUSTED, where he became its first Registrar in an acting capacity.

The others were Associate Prof. Peter Paa Kofi Yalley, Acting Director of the Institute of Competency-Based Training and Research (ICBTR); Dr. Nongiba Alkanan, Senior Lecturer; and Mrs. Elizabeth Dorothy Eshun Owusu, Assistant Registrar. 

The rest were Mr. Kofi Appiah and Mr. Peter Opoku, both Foremen; Mr. Francis Ampadu, Senior Headman; and Mr. Francis Kwabena Amoah, Assistant Security Officer (ASO). They served the University within ten (10) and twenty-six (26) years.

Prof. Humphrey Danso, the Acting Dean for the Faculty of Technical Education (FTE), who read the Vice-Chancellor’s speech at the ceremony, acknowledged the substantial contributions that the retirees had made to the University’s survival and growth. The Vice-Chancellor assured the retirees that the University would remember their legacies and efforts. 

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the University would open its doors to the retirees as far as it was legally appropriate and fit into the confines of the Conditions of Service of the University. For instance, Prof. Sarfo said, retirees could take advantage of the University’s free medical care policy for retirees and their spouses to stay healthy. While assuring the retirees that the University would maintain them in its various social networks, he hinted at plans to develop a social gathering center where past and present staff could meet for cordial interactions.

The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the retirees to be good ambassadors of the University wherever they might find themselves. He used the opportunity to advise staff members to work hard to make AAMUSTED a great institution.

For his part, the Registrar of AAMUSTED, Mr. Augustus Kwaw Brew, expressed gratitude to the retirees for their invaluable contributions to the University. He acknowledged the role of the retirees in shaping the institution and encouraged them to continue as ambassadors of the University even in retirement. 

On behalf of the retirees, Mr. Adu expressed appreciation to the Governing Council, Management, and staff of the University for the opportunity to serve in the University in different capacities for respective years. He said his colleagues and he would forever treasure the good memories and experiences they had gained from the University, adding that they would be willing and ready to serve the University in any capacity should the University find them worthy of any responsibility on retirement. 

He asked the staff to live peacefully and cooperate with the management to advance AAMUSTED. 

The University Management presented to each of the retirees a parting package of a certificate, citation, and gifts worth thousands Ghana of cedis. The gifts included electronic appliances, building materials, and furniture.
