The Environmental Health and Sanitation Education (EHSE) students at the Asante Mampong Campus of the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (USTED) have collaborated with the Mampong Municipal Assembly and artisans at the Asante Mampong Magazine to undertake a thorough clean-up of the site, popularly known as Fitam.

Among other things, the community clean-up exercise of March 5, 2026 aligned with USTED’s mandate on community engagement and service learning, provided the platform for practical application of environmental and sanitation health concepts, and fostered civic responsibility and professional competence among the students.

The students used the exercise to educate the artisans on environmental sanitation and occupational health risks, reduce the accumulated waste at the site, and present a sustainable sanitation action plan to help the artisans maintain general cleanliness.

The Lecturer-in-Charge of the Humans and Environment Course at USTED, Mr. Patrick Nii Lante Lamptey, who led the students in the exercise, explained that his course had been designed to expose level 100 students to the interaction between human activities and environmental health outcomes.

He noted that the community clean-up exercise was a valuable experiential learning opportunity that reinforced the classroom knowledge and addressed a real community environmental challenge.

Mr. Lamptey was grateful to the Mampong Municipal Assembly and the Management of USTED for in providing the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and first-aid kits to ensure the success of the exercise.
