The Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) has started preparations for the 2024 Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Cross-Country Championship slated for April 2024 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The University held its Annual Inter-Hall Cross-Country competition on March 23, 2024, at the Kumasi Campus to select its female and male teams for the GUSA Championship. The competing halls were Amaniampong Hall from the Asante Mampong Campus, and the Atwima and Opoku Ware II Halls at the Kumasi Campus of the University.
The Ag. Director of Sports at AAMUSTED, Mr. Julius Baba Apidogo, indicated at the closing session of the inter-hall competition that the University was making plans to send the selected teams into early residential camping to ensure they prepare adequately for the GUSA Competition.
AAMUSTED always does well in the GUSA Cross-Country competitions. As debutants in 2022, the University managed to claim the 4th position in the overall ranking. It maintained the same position in the 2023 tournament which was hosted by the University of Ghana, Legon.
Mr. Apidogo said the University was aiming for a higher position in the 2024 competition to cement its place among GUSA members as a strong force.
He, therefore, charged the newly constituted teams to brace up for a thorough training regimen that his outfit would roll out for them in the coming days. He also asked the selected athletes to begin their individual training even before the official residential camping began. He extended the University’s appreciation to all participants for their enthusiasm and willingness to sacrifice for the good of AAMUSTED. In that regard, he presented certificates to all the participants.
The best ten (10) finishers in the male and female competitions were awarded cash prizes for their exemplary performance. The 10-kilometre race was under the IAAF regulations.
WAUG 2023
In related news, AAMUSTED made a great impression at its maiden appearance at the December 19-20, 2023 West African Universities Games (WAUG) at Obafami Awolowo University, Ille-Ife in Nigeria. AAMUSTED could send only six (6) athletes and three (3) officials to participate in a few track events and tennis.
In the end, the team managed to win one (1) silver and two (2) bronze medals in the Men’s 4x 400-meter Hurdles, 5000-meter and 1500-meter races. The University’s Men’s 4 x 400-meter team missed a medal narrowly after finishing the keenly contested race in fourth place.
The team recently presented their medals to the Vice-Chancellor of AAMUSTED, Prof. Frederick Kwaku Sarfo, who commended them highly for their high-standing performance in Nigeria.
He reiterated the determination of the Management to support sportsmen and women of the University to improve their sporting disciplines and perform excellently for the University.
