The Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) has trained science teachers from selected public tertiary institutions and a Senior High School in Human-in-the-Loop Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems under the Commonwealth of Learning (CoL) project.

AAMUSTED is partnering with CoL on the latter’s Skills for Work (SfW) initiative to promote accountability, reliability, and ethical considerations in AI deployment.

The two-day training, which formed part of that initiative, thus sought to build capacity of the participants to leverage AI in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for sustainable development. It also validated an ongoing research into Human-in-the-Loop AI systems for Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) courses on the Open Educational Resources (OER) platform.

Addressing the participants during the opening session, the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Head of the CoL Project at AAMUSTED, Prof. Humphrey Danso, assured the participants that the training had been deliberately designed to equip them with relevant skills to contribute to bridging the gap in the complementary application of science, TVET, and AI.

He encouraged participants to maximise the training to enhance their role in integrating AI into academia so as to promote students’ learning and the advancement of knowledge.

The Head of Department of Information Technology Education at AAMUSTED, Dr. William Asiedu, who is the facilitator of the Human-in-the-Loop AI systems, expressed optimism about the project’s impact. He described it as a launchpad for indigenous science and TVET educators to share their expertise globally through the Commonwealth of Learning platform.

Through hands-on activities, the participants were equipped to play an active role in AI processes, guiding and supervising outputs for improved efficiency and personalised learning experiences.

The training came off from June 23 to 24, 2025, with participants drawn from the Wesley Girls’ Senior High School, Cape Coast; Koforidua Technical University (KTU), Accra Technical University, and AAMUSTED.
