Construction works on a modern Police Station at the Asante Mampong Campus of the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) have begun in earnest.
The project, fully funded by Entrepreneur and Philanthropist Mr. Yaw Amponsah Marfo, alias Agya Wiase, is scheduled to be completed before the end of November 2021. It would have six offices, two holding cells, and a spacious area for a charge office, among others.
At a brief sod-cutting ceremony on September 12, 2021, the Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor of AAMUSTED, Prof. James Kagya-Agyemang, expressed happiness that AAMUSTED Campus was the location for the new Police Station. According to him, the presence of the police on campus could control the growing incidences of crime in the University and its surrounding communities.
Since its inception in the 1960s, the Asante Mampong Campus, he observed, never had adequate security facilities to take care of its needs, not even when it became a satellite campus of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), for 25 years.
Therefore, he expressed gratitude to the Member of Parliament for the area and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Honourable Kwaku Sarpong Ampratwum, who initiated the project and consulted the Philanthropist to sponsor it. He was also thankful to Agya Wiase for availing his resources for the project.
The Member of Parliament, Honourable Ampratwum, pledged to donate a 4×4 Pick-up Vehicle to the station if the construction works could be completed by the end of November 2021, as promised by the Philanthropist.
He extolled Agya Wiase for his continued generosity to the inhabitants of the Asante Mampong Constituency and the new Police Station he was funding. He also appealed to other capable individuals and organisations to emulate the generosity of Agya Wiase by supporting the development of the area.
On his part, Agya Wiase gave a chronology of events that eventually led to the commencement of the project and indicated his joy to play a role in the lives of citizens of Asante Mampong.
The Asante Mampong Divisional Commander of Police, Chief Superintendent David Kwaku Amoako, assured the gathering that police personnel would be posted to the station immediately after the building was declared habitable.
He pointed out that the Asante Mampong Community was expanding in terms of residents, schools, health facilities, and businesses. “Such development always has the unintended consequence of crime. It is therefore, a blessing to have a new Police Station in this community,” he explained.
The Divisional Commander also thanked Agya Wiase profusely for the gesture. He recounted various supports that Agya Wiase had extended to the police including, a police barracks at the Asiam Community in the area.
The Chairman for the ceremony, Dean of the Faculty of Science Education, Prof. Emmanuel Dartey, said the location of the Police Station fitted into the planned development of the University.
He encouraged all who might have a role in the eventual establishment of the Police Station to maintain a good momentum in order to achieve a speedy completion of the project.
