History:

The operation of the department by name Fashion Design and Textiles Education in the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), Kumasi is a result of decision taken to create six different departments in 2013/2014 academic year from the then Department of Design and Technology Education (DTE) that operated for quite a number of years as one of the two departments of the Faculty of Technical and Vocational Education in the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK).

Historically, ‘Fashion and Tailoring’, as it was called years back, was embedded in programmes run by the former Technical Teachers Centre on the present Kumasi Technical University campus in 1963 before it was moved to the present Kumasi Campus of the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), Kumasi (erstwhile University of Education, Winneba – Kumasi Campus) in 1968 for the establishment of a Teachers’ College by name Advanced Technical Teachers College (ATTC). The ATTC offered only diploma programmes till 1996 when degree programmes started after the present place became one of the campuses of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW). In August 2020, per the Education Act 1026 of the Parliament of Ghana, the Kumasi and Mampong campuses of the UEW became fully fledged university and gained the present name Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED).
