Welcome to the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Education, Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Kumasi. The Department is one of the two departments in the Faculty of Vocational Education. The Department was carved out of the then Design and Technology Department in 2013, when the Faculty of Technical and Vocational Education was split into Faculty of Technical Education and Faculty of Vocational Education. The Department currently runs the following programmes; MPhil Catering and Hospitality, MTech Catering and Hospitality, BSc Catering and Hospitality, Diploma in Catering and Hospitality at both the regular and sandwich mode. The graduates of our programmes are working with Ghana Education Service, Hospitality industry and a significant number are entrepreneurs who have risen to become giants in food business and innovators of new food product in the Ghanaian market.
We are charged with the responsibility of providing catering services for all University functions that is providing meals and drinks for the Vice Chancellor and his guest during matriculations, congregations, Council meetings etc. However, catering services are also extended to staff, all stakeholders and any visitor from outside the University. We operate a PAYE (Pay As You EAT) system, whereby a customer pays to the cashier on duty before being served with a meal.

I must take this opportunity to thank the VC and the University Management for their overwhelming support to the Department, which has enabled us to improve every day, and we plan to expand our programmes in future to cater for the growing market demands.

a) Aim

The programme aims at giving advanced training to learners on innovative ways of identifying research problems and conducting research in the area of catering and hospitality. It also focuses on equipping learners with the needed audragogical skill to be able to teach at institutions of higher learning.

 b) Objectives of the programme

The programme seeks to:

  1. Provide students with critical analytical understanding of the principles and techniques involved in the designing, planning and management of Catering and Hospitality facilities.
  2. Develop research competencies in the students to enable them to conduct advanced analytical research and disseminate findings through seminars, conferences, workshops and publications.

   iii.   Equip students with adequate and advanced skills and attitude to make them 21st century entrepreneurs in the areas of Catering and Hospitality.
