Edmond Akwasi Agyeman is an Associate Professor at the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) in Kumasi, Ghana. He is also the Acting Deputy Director of the Directorate of Research, International Programmes and Institutional Advancement (DRIPIA) of the same University. He has extensive experience in the field of research, grants, project management, training and international collaboration.
Prof. Agyeman obtained a PhD in Migration Studies from the Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid, Spain in 2012. In 2009, he obtained an MPhil degree in Sociological Studies from the same institution. Prior to that Prof. Agyeman studied at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, Italy from 2000 to 2007 where he obtained a BA in Theology (2003), Master’s degree in Pastoral Theology of Human Mobility (2005), and an MPhil in Social Philosophy of Human Mobility (2007). The last two degrees were completed at the Scalabrini International Migration Institute (SIMI) which is an affiliate of the Urban University. In 2010, Prof. Agyeman was a visiting PhD fellow at the Centre for Migration Law of the Radboud University in the Netherlands. During the 2012/2013 academic year, he undertook post-doctoral fellowship at the Tohoku University in Japan. His research interest focuses on international migration, return migration and development, migrant integration, migration and border security, post-coloniality, African integration, higher education in Africa, social stratification, ethnicity, race, religion and culture.
Prof. Agyeman has over the years undertaken several research collaborations with scholars and institutions across the globe. In June 2015, he was a visiting lecturer at the University of Milan/SIMI summer school. He was a visiting fellow at the West African Research Center (WARC) in Dakar, Senegal in September/October, 2016. Prof. Agyeman was also a visiting lecturer at the University of Hamburg in Germany (Center for Interdisciplinary Studies–ISA Zentrum) in October 2022. Due to his participation in the MiTraWA project, he was also a visiting lecturer at the University of Passau (Department of Human Geography) in Germany in May/June, 2023. He is the co-editor with Dr. Akwasi K. Amoako-Gyampah and Prof. Dr. Bea Lundt of ‘Education in Ghana: History and Politics’. Langaa, 2023.
