The Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) is the best in Ghana and fourth best in Sub-Saharan Africa for Teaching Skills, according to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) Sub-Saharan African impact ranking.
THE is a London-based leading higher education-specialised global-ranking agency and strategic partner of Elsevier.
The ranking culminated from a thorough evaluation of 121 African universities on teaching, research, and social impact toward addressing pertinent African challenges. Eventually, 33 of the universities were not ranked because they could not meet the robust eligibility criteria of THE. It was released in 2023.
According to the ranking agency, it independently managed all the data collection and calculations but consulted African university leaders during the ranking development work in a project initiated by a consortium of African and international higher education organisations and companies, including Botho, Maverick, and Mycos. Ghana’s Ashesi University led that project in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation.
THE also considered the responses of more than 20,000 participants in the maiden sub-Saharan Africa student survey as part of the data it assessed to arrive at the ranking.
Ranking Number One (1) in Ghana for Teaching Skills solidifies AAMUSTED’s position as a top Ghanaian University, providing exceptional education in a powerful learning environment and producing quality graduates. The ranking highlights the University’s excellence in effective pedagogical communication, strategic lesson planning, academic expertise, classroom management, comprehensive assessment, feedback, etc.
THE also ranked the universities which met the eligibility criteria under several other indicators, including resources and finance, student engagement, access and fairness, number of students, and African impact.
In another development, THE also assessed and ranked 2,031 universities from 121 countries on their contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in 2024. AAMUSTED was evaluated and ranked for its efforts in four (4) of the 17 UN SDGs, namely, SDG 1 – No Poverty; SDG 4 – Quality Education; SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure; and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals. AAMUSTED annexed second place in the Ghana universities ranking under SDG 9, fifth in SDG 4, and sixth in SDGs 1 and 17.
However, in the overall ranking, AAMUSTED ranked fifth (5th) among the universities in Ghana and featured in the 601 – 800 rank range globally.
